I see the police killing of an unarmed California athlete, Kendrick McDade, is beginning to attract at least some media

attention. I posted about McDade, who was shot down when he allegedly “made a motion toward his waistband” after being hailed by police.

Now, think about it. You are walking along, minding your own business when a voice says “You there, put your hands up. Police.”

Your first impulse is going to be to look around to see who “you there” may be. After you determine that “you there” is you, you start to raise your hands. And get shot for your trouble.

Which brings on the key question. Just exactly how are you supposed to do that without bringing your hands past your waistband?

The only real way is an unnatural “butterfly motion,” moving your hands straight out away from your sides instead of raising your hands in a natural motion. Something few of us would consider doing while staring down a cop’s gun barrel.

So Kendrick McDade is dead and buried. A victim of a police shooting that got almost no publicity outside his home town.

Officially, eleven in fifty, 22 percent, of all police shootings are in error. But a very high percentage of police shootings are, like the death of Kendrick McDade, “excused.”

Only four percent of civilian self defense shootings are in error. And yet we are supposed to become highly trained like the error prone police before we can enter a public place carrying a gun? That would obviously be counterproductive.
