It’s wasn’t just Umrah, it was history making - or “her-story” making! This picture explains why because this was the most beautiful moment of the trip for me. I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to the director of the Kiswa Factory and to the Ministry of Hajj for allowing us to be the first women in modern Islamic history (and maybe all of Islamic history) to actively participate in the stitching of the Cloth (Kiswa) of the Kaaba. As an Egyptian American woman, I know the strong significance of the history of the making of the Kiswa. For a very long time, Egypt had the honor of producing the Kiswa cloth. Throughout history, the people involved in this were not only craftsman but the most noble, qualified men took part in it. In the moment they called me to participate in this, I couldn’t believe it and began shaking inside. I couldn’t believe that they invited me, a woman, to participate. Furthermore, participating in this requires that the person be in a state of ablution (wudu) which alhamdulilah I had. When I sat down to begin, I ended up not being able to make more than one stitch and for me it was enough! Th feeling of that moment and the honor of it will stay with me for the rest of my life. I hope to live long enough to tell my grandchildren about it. So for me, I will always look to Hajar (AS) as my role model, and participating in the making of the Kiswa as the first woman to do so while I was at Umrah which honored her practice of going between Safa and Marwa, while in her her city of Mecca that was started by her, made me love following in her footsteps. By the way, Hajar (AS) was Egyptian, (African) and the Prophet (saaws) has Egyptian (African) blood https://z-p3-static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tb0/1.5/16/1f6..."/>
It’s really nice to read the perspective of Harvard journalists in recognizing the work that is being done to serve Muslim students on campus through the Office the Muslim Chaplain. I’m really proud to be a part of this. We worked hard in so many communities and people liked the work, took over it, and never recognized us. Alhamdulilah the Harvard community here is really different and I appreciate their recognition of our hard work to serve the Muslim community on campus.
