“Within the American Muslim community mutual estrangement is quickly becoming the order of the day. Social media and

the growing popularity of national organizations have given us the ability to be highly selective with regard to our ‘community.’ Simply put, we form community with people that share our outlook and rarely go beyond those boundaries.

The mosque is an exception to this rule. The sacred space brings folks with different ethnicities, sensibilities, religious preferences and perspectives, and perhaps most important of all, histories together for the worship of God. Our ability to manage this diversity and make our mosques and community centers vibrant, welcoming spaces which nurture healthy relationships with God and community will be the definitive marker of our success or failure as a collective.

This year the ALIM winter program will feature lectures and workshops concerning community life with the mosque as a focal point. Our hope is that the scholars’ presentations will be complemented by much open and honest dialogue.  Please come and contribute your voice to this important conversation”
