ISNA Statement on Charleston Church Shooting

(Plainfield, IN 6/18/15) Today the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) expressed its condolences to the family and loved ones of the nine victims who were murdered last night in a hate-motivated shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

ISNA President Azhar Azeez said:

"We stand in solidarity with the African American community in Charleston over this horrific and senseless act of white supremacist terrorism and hate violence. People of conscience should come together to repudiate all forms of hate speech and discourses that stereotypes and marginalizes fellow Americans, particularly minorities. It is also time for a serious discussion about balancing between gun rights and gun control. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the nine shooting victims. It is our hope that the perpetrator is brought to justice for his crimes. We urge our members and supporters to donate to the church and the victims' families by visiting the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund which will be open to accepting donations tomorrow (Friday)."

As a partner in interfaith dialogue and cooperation, ISNA condemns strongly the hate-filled discourse in recent years which has led to attacks on houses of worship of different faith communities. Today, the condemnation is even stronger because the attack on the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church reflects an intersection of violent acts of hate and bigotry directed at African Americans of a particular faith community. There can be no tolerance for such abhorrent acts of violence. ISNA stands in solidarity with the supporters of the #BlackLivesMatter movement to say enough is enough -- this cycle of hate must be broken before any more lives are lost.
