Nabila Shams Eddin devoted her life to her community, education, and teaching Islam. Born and raised in Homs, Syria, she earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Damascus in 1978. Following her marriage to Muhammad Hisham Hawasli in 1978, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where their two sons, Tareq and Hazem, were born. They moved to Atlanta in 1982.
In Atlanta, Nabila and Hisham became active members of AlFarooq Masjid of Atlanta, Ga., with Hisham serving as a board member and lecturer. Nabila's passion for education led her to establish Dar Un Noor School, known as the "House of Light," in 1984, starting with makeshift classrooms in trailers. Despite being pregnant with her third child, Serene, she remained steadfast in her vision of providing Arabic, Quran, and Islamic studies education for children. Nabila first spearheaded the Saturday school program for native Arabic speakers and served as its principal up until 2020. In 1988, she welcomed her fourth child, Zeena, while continuing to nurture her educational endeavors.
As Dar Un Noor School flourished, plans for a permanent structure began to materialize, with Nabila playing a pivotal role in planning, fundraising, and overseeing the school's development. In 1990, the school's full-time weekday program was established, with Nabila assuming the role of principal, while continuing to lead the Saturday school. For nearly twenty-five years, from 1991 to 2015, she dedicated herself to the school, volunteering six days a week to serve her community.
Throughout her life, Nabila exemplified the values of Islam through her actions and character. As a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, teacher, and principal, she touched the lives of countless individuals, imparting the teachings of Islam to generations of children. Nabila's legacy is a testament to her enduring impact on her community, and she will be fondly remembered and cherished always.
