(HCTF) to develop the most comprehensive child abuse prevention public awareness campaign in the state of Hawai‘i. Over the past two years, we’ve commissioned extensive local research on the prevalence and perceptions of child abuse and neglect in Hawai‘i while working to build strong coalition in the movement to to keep keiki (children) safe and strengthen families.
After two years of planning and collaboration with community stakeholders, the Joyful Heart and Hawai‘i Children’s Trust Fund are excited to share the launch of the One Strong ‘Ohana campaign with you.
The strengths-based approach of this campaign emphasizes that all of us—parents, caregivers and bystanders in the community—can play a part in creating a positive and healthy environment for Hawai‘i’s children and families as One Strong ‘Ohana (family) through simple ways that build support, community and connections among one another.
It is through the support of our corporate and media partners, who stand with us as we kick off this two-year program across the state of Hawai‘i, that we are able to join together as One Strong ‘Ohana. We offer our deep appreciation and gratitude to them: Hawaii News Now, Cox Media Group, the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Midweek, Jamba, Whole Foods Market and Fun Factory. A Research-Based Approach
In the United States, nearly four children die every day as a result of child abuse and neglect. More than three quarters of these children are under the age of five and more than 40 percent of young victims won't live to see their first birthday. Over 15 million children witness violence and abuse in their homes each year. In 2010 alone, 4,199 cases of child abuse were reported in Hawai‘i.
Over the years, we have learned that there are many risk factors that can lead to child abuse and neglect. But there are also many factors—protective factors, as they’re known—that are proven to reduce harm and strengthen families. Research conducted by HCTF and Joyful Heart revealed that a majority of Hawai‘i residents have a low awareness of the state’s level of child abuse and neglect—and many people are uncertain of how to prevent or report abuse.
It is this research—and the genuine belief that in Hawai‘i, we are all part of one ‘ohana—that built the foundation of the One Strong ‘Ohana campaign. To view the complete research findings, download the report Perceptions of Child Abuse and Neglect in Hawaiʻi.
One Strong ‘Ohana’s Message and Reach
Directed towards parents, caregivers and bystanders in the community, the message of the One Strong ‘Ohana campaign is based on the protective factors that are proven to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect. It emphasizes simple things, like reaching out to other parents to ask how they’re doing, offering to pick up groceries or watching the kids for an hour, that increase social connections and support to reduce the incidence of abuse and neglect and build stronger families.
We believe that through intervention and holistic support services, education and awareness, community engagement and public-private partnerships, we can collectively strengthen families to end the cycle of abuse and neglect.
With tools like PSAs, posters and tip cards and with the support of our community, media and corporate partners, the One Strong ‘Ohana message is projected to reach nearly all Hawaiian adults multiple times by the end of 2012. The Hawai‘i Children’s Trust Fund has committed over $1 million in funding for this initiative and Joyful Heart is continuing to enlist private sector support, recruit influential local leaders to join the coalition and engage social media to further expand the reach of One Strong ‘Ohana campaign.
But we need your support.
