Women and The American Mosque
Study Examines the Position of Women in American Mosques
A recently released study, "The American Mosque Study
Report #3 :Women and the American Mosque," examines the attitudes of masjids toward the inclusion of women in the life of the masjid.
What Makes a Masjid "Woman Friendly"?
The report, written by Aisha Al-Adawiyah, Sarah Sayeed and Ihsan Bagby, rated mosques women-friendly based on four criteria:
(1) The level of women's physical access to the main prayer area
(2) Attendance of women at Jumah prayer
(3) If the masjid provided women-specific programming a
(4) Whether women participated in masjid goverance.
African American Masjid Most Friendly
Study results showed that overall African American masjid ranked highest as "women-friendly," with 81% of African American masjids ranking good or excellent. Even those masjids that met some or several criteria for being "woman friendly" expressed a need for improvement.
Marginalizing Women Risks Youth
The reports concludes that when women are marginalized in masjids the health of our communities and the commitment of our youth are risked.
Report Recommendations
Recommendations and goals to help masjids become more"women-friendly" are included in the report. Masjid leaders are encouraged to set goals for improvement.
Setting Goals for Improvement
Masjid leaders are encouraged to set goals for improvement. Are there changes that you can you make immediately to make your masjid more women friendly? What are some possible goals for six month...and a year from now?

YOU CAN
Make a Difference!
This summer, many children--Muslims and non-Muslims who usually get lunch in school may go hungry. You can help by providing a summer lunch site at your masjid, center or Islamic school.
The food, or cost of food, is provided--you provide the space and volunteers! This is a simple way to respond to the Islamic duty of feeding the poor.
