Kamala Harris SWA (Sista With Attitude)!
01/20/21
When I first heard about Kamala Harris being chosen as Joe Biden’s running mate, my first
response was “ I can live with that, because she has attitude.”
Having “Attitude” is different from having an attitude. The Urban Dictionary defines it as
“Manner of carrying oneself. “
Some of the women with attitude in history include Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Fannie Lou
Hamer, Coretta Scott King, and Kathleen Cleaver.
Women with attitude don’t know their place, they make their place. As Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
said "well-behaved women seldom make history."
Kamala demonstrated “Attitude” as a young prosecutor taking on colleagues who were
engaging in less than ethical behaviors.
Kamala demonstrated “Attitude” as a senator effectively questioning Supreme Court nominee
Brett Cavenaugh during the confirmation hearings.
Kamala demonstrated “Attitude” as she challenged her future running mate on his past racist
support of busing.
My impression of post-Trump Washington is that it is going to take a “scrapper'' from Scranton
and a “Sista from Oakland with Attitude” to confront the present racial and ethnic divisions that
exist in America today.
When we look at the life that Kamala has lived, we see that she has been carrying the weight of
three cultural demographics. Women, African Americans, and the Asian American communities.
She has had a unique cultural experience that has prepared her for this next assignment.
She was raised in Oakland and resided in Quebec, with an Indian mother and Carribean father,
she has a Jewish husband and self identifies as an African American with HBCU and Divine
Nine credentials. She epitomizes the pluralism that is America. Not Trumps “Amerikkka”!
It’s important for black and brown little girls to view the ascension of Kamala Harris to the role of
Vice president to recognize that the sky is the limit for them.
I often reflect on how much brain power has been lost over the years due to racism, classism,
and sexism. She understands how racism, sexism, and classism can impact people who reside
in this country.
When we see the possibility of the first female and person of color in the second most powerful
position in the world we can relish with hope how far this country has come.
We also have to look at this country through realistic lenses, and specifically based on the
activities of January 6, we see how far this country still has to go.
I pray that it gives hope to young women around the country that they can accomplish any goal
that they set their minds to.
Kamala was heavily criticized during the campaign based on her role as a prosecutor in
California. What people fail to mention is that, despite her flaws, her imprisonment rate was
much lower than her predecessors.
She also would only seek three strike convictions when violent crimes were committed.
She took great pains to develop alternative programs that reduced imprisonment.
I suspect that this is a sample of what we'll get from her in role as Vice President of the United
States. I’m under the impression that healthcare, social justice issues, and criminal reform will
be at the top of her agenda.
I pray that we have learned from the Obama administration that just because African-Americans
get elected to higher officerices, they are not in that position to only promote issues that are
important to the African-American community.
We have to understand that politicians have to serve all of their constituents. So the important
thing is to create policies and laws that are essentially not colorblind, but fair and just. If they do
this all people will especially the most vulnerable members of this country will benefit.
It is my prayer that she is successful during her term, and that she paves the way for many
more young women who look like her to not only seek higher office, but seek to bring to their
offices higher ideals.
As Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman stated in her poem presented at the inauguration “ The Hill
We Climb,” “this country is not broken, it is just not finished”.

Kamala Harris
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), the nation’s oldest African American Greek-lettered sorority, declared Wednesday “Kamala D. Harris Day” in honor of their member’s historic inauguration.
The sorority, which was founded in 1908 at Howard University, where Harris also attended, announced the declaration on Twitter. In the announcement, the sorority also urged members to “wear shades of pink” and their “favorite strand of pearls” to acknowledge the historic moment.

Not Broken, but simply unfinished... “I am the daughter of Black writers who are descended from freedom fighters, who broke their chains and changed the world. They call me,” so the mantra of Amanda Gorman
When Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet from Los Angeles, took to the stage on Wednesday, it was immediately clear why the new president had chosen her as his inaugural poet.
Gorman echoed, in dynamic and propulsive verse, the same themes that Biden has returned to again and again and that he wove throughout his inaugural address: unity, healing, grief and hope, the painful history of American experience and the redemptive power of American ideals.
