We are pleased to share "Islam and The BlackAmerican: Two Decades-and Many Gray Hairs- Later", a keynote lecture by Dr. Sherman Jackson as part of UPF's American Muslim Pathways project (https://www.muslimpathways.com). This keynote lecture is followed by a discussion with Dr. Sherman Jackson, respondent Dr. Fatimah Fanusie and moderator Alex Kronemer. This lecture was delivered on September 26, 2024 at Georgetown University and was hosted by the Unity Productions Foundation in partnership with The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. It was a chance for Dr. Jackson to reflect on two decades of Black American Muslim history and the legacy of his book "Islam and the Blackamerican." In Dr. Jackson’s groundbreaking work, he offers insights into the ongoing journey of Black Muslims in America. Sherman Jackson, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor, King Faisal Chair in Islamic Thought and Culture and Professor of Religion and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He was formerly the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Visiting Professor of Law and Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). He is the author of several books, including Islamic Law and the State: The Constitutional Jurisprudence of Shihâb al-Dîn al-Qarâfî (E.J. Brill, 1996), On the Boundaries of Theological Tolerance in Islam: Abû Hâmid al-Ghazâlî’s Faysal al-Tafriqa (Oxford, 2002), Islam and the Blackamerican: Looking Towards the Third Resurrection (Oxford, 2005) Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering (Oxford, 2009), and most recently Sufism for Non-Sufis? Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah al-Sakandari’s Taj al-‘Arus (Oxford, 2012).
