EU ban on Iranian channels, hypocritical: Analyst

In a blatant violation of freedom of speech, European satellite provider Eutelsat SA has stopped the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels on the order of the European Commission.

The decision follows months of jamming of Iranian channels by European satellite companies.

Iranian news channels affected by the decision only aimed to break the West’s monopoly on news broadcast by reflecting the voice of the oppressed people to the world.

The illegal move by Eutelsat SA, therefore, is a step to silence all alternative news outlets representing the voice of the voiceless.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Kamel Wazni, political commentator from Beirut, to further discuss the issue.

The following is an approximate transcript of the interview.

Press TV: Sir I’d like to get your thoughts on this media ban. Many have been saying that this is inconsistent, full of double standards and at the end of the day hypocritical. Do you have anything to add to that?

Wazni: Well obviously it is against everything the Europeans are saying because they said they are tolerant, they are acceptance, they allow free speech. They wanted to have a channel of communication with the rest of the world and what they do, they actually block a media outlet its purpose is to actually give a different perspective in the world.

I think this is an outrage what they have done and hypocritical what they actually done. Today the European should facilitate the open dialogue between cultures, between different philosophy, between different ideology and not close a channel of communication such as the Iranian TV or the Iranian media.

Here you can see the double standard and actually the hypocrite on the European Commission which shows the mentality that they have and the tolerance that they have which does not show any tolerance for the other opinion and the world have to watch and judge because freedom of speech is a guarantee by all lawful and international law and this is really a violation of every acceptable norm that should be condemned by the whole world.

Press TV: A key point of the inconsistency that exists here is the issue of the French cartoons that were published and of course the Americans made a movie that disrespects the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad. Now all of those seem to be acceptable under the guise of freedom of speech and under their interpretation of freedom of speech but if you recall even Google refused to move that movie given the international outcry that it received. It seems that the West does not really practice what it preaches?

Wazni: Obviously the West has an agenda, it is against Islam and against the Iranian people and against anything that actually disagree with the Western doctrine. They have one doctrine, is the Western doctrine and everybody has to obey the doctrine otherwise they can block it. They block it directly through the media or they impose sanctions as they have done against the Iranian people.

It is an outrageous war against the freedom of the people to actually participate in a dialogue because you have to remember you have two different point of view and those point of view is coming through the media and here they decided not to filter what is coming out just to block it outright.

You think that the European they would understand the concept of the free speech, of something that refused to discriminate, refused to have some other point of view but you have to remember also such of hatred that exists in these heads of states, they are part of the European community that they are actually narrow-minded and full of hatred towards the religion and Islam and towards the Iranian and they will not allow anything to challenge them and to say this can be done in different way and this is a different picture and different perspective and different light on how we report issues.

I think they wanted to have one media. This brings us to the system of dictatorship and the system of repression regime which actually close all the media outlets and allow one channel to speak and that is the Western channel and this is really dictatorship at best and the West and the European are exhibiting that dictatorship and they should be actually ashamed of themselves because now things came very clear in the sun and the world has to say which one exhibiting dictatorship in this new era and you are going to find out the one who blocked the media outlets as it is right now with the case with these networks that have been blocked from spreading their point of view about world affair.

Press TV: A top IRIB official said, he brought up a very interesting notion in one of his interviews regarding the media ban. He said that this ban comes while terrorist groups including the anti-Iran Mojahedin Khalq Organization also known as the MKO all have their own channels on Hot Bird. Now that probably brings hypocrisy and double standards to a whole another level?

Wazni: Well obviously this is really a war against the Iranian. You have to not to be surprised because the sanction that has been imposed on the Iranian people for very long time since 1979 and has been accelerated by the US and the European community and just couple days the European community imposed heavy sanctions against the Iranian.

They want to choke the Islamic Republic [of Iran] because they disagree with the Islamic Republic on many things and as you mentioned they support states that suppose to be illegitimate like Israel that should not have actually deported all the Palestinians and brought all these Jews from all over the world to put them in their place.

They actually have been against the reporting of a free media that express all the view and they felt that as my friend in London said they are actually reporting different perspective on the inside stories of what happened in Britain, in Europe, in the United States and basically it is like that.

They want to have a monopoly on everything that come out and I think they are saying we do not want, they want to destroy nations economically, politically and as far as freedom of speech they can block all these media outlets.

You have these countries, they will align themselves with the devil, with terrorist groups as Mojahedin Khalq that have been actually prosecuted and have been convicted in a lot of crimes throughout its history against the Iranian people but they do not have a problem with it because actually they funded these groups to carry their agenda against the Iranians.

So America and the West they have such hatred against nations that they disagree with. Look at the case on Cuba, you had sanctions against the people of Cuba since 1962 up to now. Kennedy died and Castro is sick, you have a whole generation, the Soviet Union gone and they still have these sanctions against the Cuban people.

Look at such hatred that they have and they talk about forgiveness and you have to remember those people they do not know freedom of speech, they do not know forgiveness, they do not know open heart, they do not know what it means to have a nation willing to express point of view and actually here they do not understand what justice is all about and thus you will not be surprised. They put their hand with terrorist organizations and support illegitimate state that actually repress the people and impose all kind of torture and kill them as the case in Palestine.

Press TV: Mr. Wazni very briefly if you may, based on the reasons that European Commission has divulged to the public for removing the 19 Iranian channels do you think that is even legal to remove another country’s television and radio stations from international airwaves?

Wazni: I think it should be illegal. I think the freedom of speech and the right to communicate is supposed to be protected and should be protected and people have to be allowed to voice their opinion. Anything other that is a form of monopoly and dictatorship and should be condemned.

What the European did is shameful act and the world have to look at the true color of the European community because this is what they really are. They actually like one-sided story and this is the whole story.
