Imam Nadim S.Ali: Faith leaders push for Emory to denounce violence

As-Salaamu-Alaikum/Peace Be Upon You:

Imam Nadim S. Ali

Imam Nadim S.Ali

I stand before you today in support of the student encampments that have emerged across the nation, and throughout the world to protest the recent execution of the war in Gaza by the Netanyahu and Biden administrations-

These students have taken a courageous stance against the unjust and disproportionate use of force that has resulted in the death of 1000’s of  innocent civilians, including women and children.

To unleash the police on peaceful protesters is unconscionable.

It is important to allow the students and faculty to exercise their  freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. These two American values are not always popular, but this is a right that people have fought and died for.

We also encourage the various universities, not only in Georgia, but around the country to divest from  Companies that are supporting the military apparatus of Netanyahu administration.

I would also encourage the State of Ga. to rescind the law that contractors and employees of State of Ga. have to commit to not engage in BDS activities against the Israeli Government  before they can do business with the state of Ga.

It is a mistake for President Biden to speak at the Alma Mata of one of the greatest proponents of peace, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King was a man who believed in non-violent resistance and stood up for the rights of the oppressed. The execution of the war in Gaza and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands stands in stark contrast to Dr. King's teachings and values.

I implore  President Biden not to come and speak at Morehouse unless he is coming to announce a permanent ceasefire in Gaza!

The protests that have emerged are not anti-Semitic, as some have falsely claimed.

This is a disinformational red herring.  The protests are anti-genocide, anti-occupation, anti-militarism, and anti IDF not anti-Judeaism.

We stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.

As a Muslim, I am reminded of the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said, Whosoever of you sees an injustice, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart.

These students have taken this message to heart and are using their voices to speak out against the injustice that they see.

In the words of the poet Shk. Sulaiman El-Hadi

“ The future and truth belong to the youth”.

The Quran teaches us that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely (5:32). The killing of innocent civilians in Gaza, including children and women, cannot be justified.

The ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands and the denial of their basic human rights is a violation of international law and a stain on the conscience of the world.

As American citizens we must hold our government accountable for its actions and demand that it take a stance for justice and peace.

We stand in solidarity with the student encampments and their demand for an end to the occupation and the blockade of Gaza.

We call on the Biden administration to take a stronger stance against the Netanyahu  government's actions and work towards a just and lasting peace in the region.

The war on Gaza exemplifies the 3 major  evils of society that Dr. King spoke of

—the evil of racism,

 the evil of poverty,

and the evil of  militarism

These evils continue to exist today  just as they existed in 1967 when Dr. King delivered these words.

In closing Dr. King also said “ Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Let us stand together and demand justice for the Palestinian people.

Thank you.
