Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi Waciuri, a senior leader of the Mau Mau movement — formally known among its
Dedan Kimathi
fighters as the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA) — was hanged at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison after his capture in 1956. He was buried in an unmarked grave, and the location of his remains has never been confirmed.
Kimathi played a central role in the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s, an armed anti-colonial movement that challenged British rule in Kenya. To the colonial government, he was portrayed as a dangerous insurgent; to many Kenyans, he became a symbol of resistance and the struggle for land, dignity, and self-determination.
By the time of his execution, the rebellion had already been largely suppressed, but Kimathi’s death marked the final phase of the conflict and reinforced his symbolic status in the independence struggle.
After Kenya gained independence in 1963, early governments tended to emphasise national unity and did not publicly centre the Mau Mau legacy. Over time, however, historical reassessments led to wider recognition of the movement’s role in the fight against colonial rule.
In 2006, a statue of Dedan Kimathi was unveiled in central Nairobi, depicting him in forest-war attire holding a rifle and dagger — a tribute to his role in the liberation struggle. Today, Kimathi is widely remembered as one of the key figures associated with Kenya’s path toward independence.
