Central Park station renamed in honor of Malcolm X

The renaming honors the civil rights leader’s deep ties to the neighborhood, where he lived for more than a decade before his assassination in 1965. 

Malcolm X’s daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz, joined Hochul and community members for the ceremony. 

“It was his unwavering moral compass rooted in boundless love for us all that gave him this courage to speak truth to power, no matter the cost,” Shabazz said.

“One of the best ways to celebrate the rich history and community of Harlem is to recognize the contributions of Malcolm X and the Harlem Renaissance to New York and to the world,” Hochul added. 

The legislation was one of two bills signed Sunday, alongside a measure designating the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District as a region of cultural significance ahead of the movement’s 100th anniversary in 2025. 

Hochul and local leaders also held a moment of silence for Lloyd A. Williams, the event’s co-founder, who died Aug. 5.
