Burkina Faso Rejects Saudi 200 Mosques Deal, Demands Education and Health Investment...

Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has reportedly declined an offer from Saudi Arabia to construct 200 mosques in the country, urging the kingdom to prioritize investments in critical infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and job-creating businesses instead.

President Traoré emphasized that Burkina Faso already has a sufficient number of mosques, many of which remain underutilized. He highlighted the urgent need for projects that would directly benefit the Burkinabè people and strengthen the country’s self-reliance.

This decision aligns with Traoré’s broader vision for national development, which prioritizes essential infrastructure to drive long-term sustainability. Since assuming office, he has implemented key reforms to enhance project management and delivery, ensuring that all public construction projects adhere to strict technical, environmental, and safety standards.

In addition to focusing on infrastructure, Traoré has launched initiatives to address housing shortages, particularly for internally displaced persons affected by security challenges. On July 12, 2024, he unveiled a plan to construct 1,000 social housing units, reinforcing his commitment to providing adequate housing for all Burkinabè citizens by 2030.

Further demonstrating his push for economic self-sufficiency, President Traoré has rejected financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), advocating instead for the mobilization of domestic resources. His administration is prioritizing agriculture, local industries, and sustainable development as key drivers of economic growth and resilience.
