"This Iranian lobbying is an intervention in the internal affairs of the kingdom of Bahrain and strange behaviour that represents an infringement of its sovereignty," said foreign ministry undersecretary Hamad al-Amer.

Amer referred to "letters" sent by the Iranian foreign minister to the United Nations, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League, concerning Bahrain, BNA state news agency said.

BNA did not reveal the content of Tehran's letters, but said Iran had demanded "effective action from the international organisations towards Bahrain."

On Tuesday, Manama recalled its ambassador from Tehran, citing Iran's "blatant interference" in its affairs after the Islamic Republic criticised Bahrain for bringing in Gulf troops to help quell the pro-democracy protest.

Tehran on Wednesday recalled its ambassador in Manama "in protest at the killing of the people of Bahrain by its government."
