Atlanta Muslim Leadership Meets With Harris/Walz Team

This presidential election is the most consequential election in recent history. What is at stake
in this election is especially important to the Muslim community in the United States. This is the
reason that surrogates of the Harris/Walz campaign met with a cross section of the Atlanta,
Georgia Muslim Community in an effort to gain their support to elect Vice President Kamala
Harris and Governor Tim Walz

The meeting was chaired by Imam Furqan Muhammad the Amir(Convenor) of the Metro Atlanta
Majlis Ash Shura. The Majlis represents the interests of many Muslims in the metro Atlanta
area.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, (The first Muslim elected to congress)was present,
and able to detail Vice President Harris’s contributions as a part of the Biden administration.
He was also able to highlight the Harris vision for this country in contrast to the Trump vision for
this country; as detailed in the infamous Project 2025 manual. Sister Salima Suswell of the
Black Muslim Leadership Conference was able to articulate the importance of Georgia Muslim
supporting the Harris/Waltz campaign in this tight election. Due to the fact that the previous
Trump administration took a very hostile stance towards Muslim majority nations, and the
indigenous Muslim community in the United States.
It was emphasized that the electoral votes that Georgia holds are at stake, and due to the
predicted slim margins that may determine this election, the Muslim can be key to a Harris/Walz
victory in November.
Attorney General Ellison was able to share that he has a long history with both Vice President
Harris, and Governor Walz
He reported that he and Governor Walz came into the congress together, and when he
became Attorney General he resides in an office in close proximity to the Governor’s. He was
able to share that when George Floyd was murder Officer Derek Chauvin; one of the first calls
that he received was from the governor. The governor asked him to take over the prosecution
of Officer Chauvin.
This led to the successful prosecution of the policeman by Attorney General Ellison, and this led
to the conviction of Officer Chauvin. He highlighted this story to demonstrate the character of
Governor Tim Waltz. He also was able to share how as a prosecutor Vice President Harris was
able to develop diversion programs, and student retention programs to assist people who are at
risk of becoming caught up in the criminal justice web receive a second chance.
Much criticism has been made of Vice President Harris’s tenure as a prosecutor, but in that
position she was able to make a difference in the lives of ordinary people. Attorney General
Ellison was able to share that Vice President Harris has spent her career advocating for others,
and as President she will demonstrate the same character.
The attendees at the meeting represented a cross section of the local Atlanta Muslim
community, and based on the comments and questions that were presented to Attorney

General Ellison they demonstrated a keen understanding of domestic and international issues.
The attendees were able to express concern for international issues such as Gaza, and
Sudan.

They were also able to discuss the importance of domestic issues such as police reform,
affordable housing, and student debt forgiveness. Indigenous Muslims have a unique position
just as WEB Dubois spoke of the double consciousness of the African American, African
American Muslims have a triple consciousness of being African, Americans, and Muslims; so
the interests, political positions, and philosophies are just as varied.
However this election turns out the Muslim vote can be a determining factor especially in the
Battleground states of Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michighan. It is encouraged to vote your
conscience, and to choose the candidate that will best serve the interests of the entire Muslim
community.
