In February 2008, Karen Armstrong gave a TED talk in Monterey, CA that was a game-changer. That talk won her the

TED prize for 2008, which she used to launch the Charter for Compassion, a global movement that has reached Atlanta in a significant way. In February 12, 2014, the City of Atlanta issued an official resolution proclaiming Atlanta to be a “compassionate city.”

According to Armstrong, “A compassionate city is an uncomfortable city! A city that is uncomfortable when anyone is homeless or hungry. Uncomfortable if every child isn’t loved and given rich opportunities to grow and thrive. Uncomfortable when any group anywhere in the world is marginalized or oppressed. Uncomfortable when as a community we don’t treat our neighbors as we would wish to be treated.”

The catalyst for this significant act by the Atlanta City Council was the work of a grassroots movement called, Compassionate Atlanta. Starting in 2013, a small group of committed volunteers began sowing the seeds to make Atlanta a compassionate city. One of our first sponsors was the M.L. King Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College, which has been instrumental in helping us achieve our mission.

At this unique event on April 3, Ms. Armstrong will receive the highest honor that Morehouse presents for peace, reconciliation and non-violence.
