Piedmont College Visit Al Farooq Masjid

Dear Brother Bilal,

I am writing to thank you on behalf of the twenty-eight students whom you welcomed to Al-Farooq Masjid on Tuesday afternoon, February 21,2017.  After years and years of planning such field trips, I have lost track of how many times you have guided Piedmont College students through the beauties of Al-Farooq and the basics of Islam, but they never forget it. 
You have a remarkable skill for answering the most elementary questions without making them sound dumb, and for handling the most controversial ones without being lured into polemics.  When all is said and done, what students remember is your humor, your passion, your knowledge and your humility.  You are the face of Islam for most of them, and while that is a huge responsibility for any human being of any faith, you do your faith great honor.
As my colleague Tim Garvin-Leighton mentioned to you at the end of the afternoon, I am retiring from teaching at the end of the spring semester.  What will I do, without you to quiz me on the magnitude of Crispus Attucks’ life or to help me see my way through the complexity of worldwide Islam?  I trust the One God to cause our paths to cross again, and meanwhile I thank you—from the bottom of my heart—for being such a trustworthy guide for my students and such a good friend to me.
