Comrades Sitting Together
When Sankara visited Tehran in 1986, the CIA and French DGSE viewed the meeting as a bridge between Marxist and Islamic Revolutions, two of the West’s primary fears.
Because of this, the US grouped Burkina Faso with what they termed “outlaw” or “pariah” regimes. By hosting Khamenei and visiting Tehran, Sankara was seen as cementing Burkina Faso’s status as a “subversive influence” in West Africa.
After their meeting, Sankara and Khamenei issued a joint communique condemning “Zionism, racism, and imperialism”, the Holy Trinity of Western politics.
