Out of all the symbols that Muslims could have chosen to symbolize the unity of Islam, it is indeed ironic that they chose the crescent, which for many signifies the greatest manifestation of division amongst Muslims, at least in Western lands! 📢 Bismillah. Announcement! CAIR Georgia is excited to announce that we have hired a new Staff Attorney: Nicole Fauster, an accomplished international activist and recent Georgetown Law graduate as a Blume Public Interest Scholar.

Nicole Fauster was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in a close-knit Ugandan-American community. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Global Studies and Arabic Language and Cultures and has a minor in Social and Economic Justice. Nicole’s passion for social justice and legal issues affecting marginalized communities lead her to undertake human rights projects in the Middle East. In Cairo, she worked to help resettle East African refugees who had fled their home countries and had been smuggled to Egypt. In post-revolution Tunisia, she worked on issues of torture within the framework of transitional justice. In Jordan, Nicole and a colleague spearheaded an advocacy project to raise awareness of the plight of migrant laborers in Jordan under the auspices of a grant from Davis Projects for Peace. They produced a documentary on the abuse migrant workers face and the grassroots advocacy and community building many migrants in Jordan engage in by necessity.

The trajectory of Nicole’s burgeoning career in international human rights law and advocacy took a shift in 2015 after the murders of her community members, Our Three Winners: Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha. That’s where she saw the need to focus her work on the United States and the civil and human rights of marginalized people, including Muslims, right here at home. In an effort to better understand the spiritual needs of Muslim communities and understand what Islam says about justice and inequality, she spent two years studying Quranic Arabic at Bayyinah Institute and Islamic Sciences at Qalam Institute.

Thereafter, she commenced her studies at Georgetown University Law Center as a Blume Public Interest Scholar and now she holds a Juris Doctor and a Certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies. Throughout law school, she continued to advocate and work toward the protection of marginalized communities both professionally and in her capacity as the Co-President of the Muslim Law Student’s Association. She has interned and externed for well-known civil rights and movement lawyering organizations including: the American Civil Liberties Union, Project South, and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee where she worked, respectively, to advocate for the rights of Muslim prisoners, support communities affected by government surveillance, and help litigation efforts to prevent the deportation of Muslims who would be tortured upon return to their home countries. She served as a research assistant for Asma Uddin, Esq. as she authored her latest book, When Islam is Not a Religion. She was also a research assistant for Georgetown’s Center for Privacy and Technology where she filed dozens of open records requests to understand the extent of government surveillance of Latinx students. Her research on the use of surveillance in inner-city metropolitan areas contributed to the Center’s recent publication on the topic.

While in her last year of law school, Nicole had the privilege of participating in two of Georgetown’s clinics: The Center for Applied Legal Studies Clinic (CALS) and The Health Justice Alliance Clinic (HJA). As a CALS student, Nicole and her partner represented an asylum seeker and survivor of domestic violence. They successfully argued her case in Immigration Court, and Nicole continued to help the asylee apply for other immigration benefits after their victory. As an HJA student, Nicole represented low-income public-school students with disabilities whose legal rights had been violated under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Nicole successfully litigated such claims against D.C. Public Schools and secured the necessary accommodations and evaluations for her client’s children. By the end of her time at Georgetown, Nicole had completed over 150 hours of pro bono legal assistance.

Nicole is passionate about justice for marginalized communities and comes equipped with the tools to represent members of our community in their times of need. She is thrilled to return to Georgia, join the CAIR-Georgia family, and continue doing important legal and advocacy work for the Muslim community!
