SNCC Legacy Project
Dear Brothers and Sisters

SNCC veterans are reaching out to friends, colleagues and civil rights veterans who know Brother Jamil Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown) to provide you with vital information about his innocence in the 2000 murder of a Fulton County Sheriff's deputy, and to enlist your support as Brother Jamil struggles to win his freedom.

Jamil Al-Amin has been the target of intense U.S. government suppression for 45 years and has spent much of his adult life in prison. Since his imprisonment in 2000, the struggle to gain Jamil's freedom was headed by his late brother and our dear SNCC colleague, Ed Brown, and by Jamil's wife of 45 years, Attorney Karima Al-Amin. But with Ed's untimely death this past November, it is now important that those of us who knew and worked with Jamil and Ed do our part to help Jamil get transferred out of the brutal federal supermax facility in Colorado (where he is held in solitary confinement), and to win his freedom.

During the week of September 24, 2012 in Washington, D.C., the SNCC Legacy Project is joining the Jamil Al-Amin Justice Fund and media sponsor WPFW-FM, 89.3 FM Pacifica Radio to mount a series of public information programs and events that examine his life as a civil rights activist and Islamic religious leader, and chronicle the systematic repression and covert actions by the U.S. government to silence his voice. The programs will reveal new information about the charges against him in 2000, call for an end to his imprisonment in Florence, Colorado and grant him a new triaOn Monday, September 24, 2012 at 1:00 PM EDT, WPFW 89.3 Pacifica Radio's "Jazz and Justice" Program hosted by Tom Porter will air a radio special, "Buried Alive" (a reference to Jamil's current imprisonment far beneath the ground in Colorado). The Program is produced by the SNCC Legacy Project for the Justice Fund. You can listen to the program via the Internet by logging on to www.wpfw.org.

On Thursday, September 27, a "Free Jamil Al-Amin Teach-In" will be held at Busboys and Poets, located at 14th and V Streets, NW from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. For details please read the information on the flyer below

A Voice for the Voiceless

His voice had power. His booming delivery was infused with rousing socio-political rhetoric. With a rhythmic cadence, tone, and inflection, his voice kept a beat. It emboldened a generation of black youth, and frightened the white establishment. His voice organized black voters in rural southern towns. It later pushed drug dealers and prostitutes out of his Atlanta community. As he aged, the provocative…
