Chaplain Khalil Abdur Rashid :  I'm so proud to announce that my amazing, fabulous, gifted, beautiful wife has been appointed the first Muslim woman Chaplain at Harvard University. She has always worked so hard to serve community members and students in New York, Dallas and now Cambridge. Often times, as a volunteer, she took criticism and far too often no recognition for her tremendous contribution. Too often, our Muslim communities pride the work of men and neglect the powerful contribution of women. We can learn a lot from the progress and development of major, successful non-Muslim institutions that support and encourage women's leadership. Harvard has recognized Samia's volunteer work on campus and has seen the value of having a Muslim woman as a mentor for the Muslim and non-Muslim students (both undergraduate and graduate). She has served the community here by helping to develop and implement the programs I offer on campus from the film nights, to the Friday Halaqa Seminars, to interfaith programs and the new Harvard Umrah, of which she was an integral part. Now, she helps me manage the first ever Harvard Ramadan Program, with nightly iftar dinners that host 400 students, faculty and staff. Her work with me is truly complimentary and we complete each other. The President of Harvard himself as well as his Chief of Staff have articulated how fortunate the Harvard community is to have Samia on campus as an official University resource for religious, spiritual and ethical life at Harvard. My wife now serves with the other Harvard Chaplains and she is the first ever Muslim woman to help lead religious life at Harvard! Alhamdulilah she was appointed via unanimous vote at Harvard and received by the Harvard Chaplains board with a standing ovation! Congratulations my love! You may read more about her and check out her listing on the Harvard Chaplains website here: https://chaplains.harvard.edu/people/samia-omar

Samia Omar

Samia Omar

Samia Omar is an Egyptian American who completed her bachelor's degree in social work and has pursued a master's degree at SMU in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Islamic Studies. She holds an advanced certificate in Islamic Studies as well as a general ijaaza in Islamic sciences. She worked in New York City from 2001 - 2005 as an Islamic Studies school teacher in an Islamic school. She also worked as a residential manager for many years overseeing service to adults with developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges. She relocated to Dallas, Texas to help her husband establish the Arabic language and Islamic studies program at TAQWA Seminary. She later became co-founder of the Islamic Seminary of America and managed the Islamic studies and Arabic language programs there, with over 200 students in attendance.

After losing her oldest daughter to cancer, she devoted herself to assisting her husband as a volunteer to serve the Muslim community, especially youth in their journey to overcome life’s challenges. In this regard she developed two youth programs in Dallas, Texas. She is now a lead organizer and developer of the Hadara Program, a study abroad program for Arabic language and Islamic civilization. Ustadha Samia has also served for several years as a group leader for Umrah for numerous different Umrah groups and was delighted to accompany Harvard Muslim students and to serve as an official group leader for the Harvard Umrah trip as part of the programs of the Muslim Chaplain at Harvard University. She now serves as the first Muslim woman chaplain at Harvard University, as part of the Harvard Chaplains, devoted to supporting religious, spiritual and ethical life on campus.
