Today,  (December 20, 2016) the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta presented the Inaugural Courage Award to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed in recognition of his support for immigrants, refugees and people of all faiths.

 

Soumaya Khalifa, Executive Director and Founder of the ISB, told Mayor Reed, "We applaud you for your leadership, your courage, and for taking a stand." Earlier this year, Mayor Kasim Reed took a stand to welcome Syrian refugees to Atlanta. Khalifa continued, "We appreciate Mayor Kasim Reed's courage in declaring Atlanta as a welcoming city for Syrian refugees. Last month, Mayor Reed reaffirmed his commitment and the city's commitment to diversity and inclusion. We also see that he implements initiatives that reinforce that commitment."

Upon receiving the award, Mayor Reed stated, "This recognition from the Islamic Speakers Bureau is truly humbling. It is a gift that I will cherish always." Mayor Reed stated, "It is my privilege to ensure the city of Atlanta treats all her residents and visitors with respect, dignity, and fairness. More importantly, with a welcoming heart. Not only will people's rights be respected, but there will be a warmth to Atlanta."

We will not waver from this position, and will continue to offer every possible support to our foreign-born residents."
