The wording on the ad suggests those who support jihad are savages. And urges others to support Israel. Critics condemn the posters’ message. Experts say postings like these are dangerous.
The ad space is bought by The American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), a conservative anti-Islam group run by activist Pamela Geller. She tried to post the ads as early as last year but metro systems nationwide turned her down.
Recently the AFDI won a court battle allowing them to post the sign under free speech. The signs are now visible in cities such as New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC.
These signs have been posted at four different metro stops in the DC metro area. They've been up for more than two weeks. Since then, they've been the subject of counter ad campaign and court battles--over a message mired in controversy.
Some signs in the metro system have been covered by stickers and one member of Congress urged a metro system boycott. So far, the signs will stay at least until this week. If the goal is to win over hearts and minds it’s not working.
The Council on American Islamic Relations plans to counter the anti-Islam signs this week asking the public to show forgiveness and avoid the ignorant.
