Quran Reflection #26: Purity, Not Pain Avoidance, is Success

Qur'an Surah 91, Verse 9:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا

Translation:
He will indeed be successful who purifies it (the soul).

Notes:
We are often taught to think of success as the avoidance of pain. A successful person has a perfect life without trouble. They have a house, a job in middle management, 2.5 kids and of course an intact family. When things stray from this prescription it is failure. Losing your job is failure, having imperfect children is failure, domestic drama is failure. But this verse turns this understanding on its head. Success, as defined by God, isn't the avoidance of pain at all. It is purification of the soul, which often is the result of experiencing pain with courage and patience. Success is not a destination. It is responding ethically to the challenges in our lives. Success cannot be determined by the size of your house or the grade point of your kid. It is a score only God knows because it's one and only criteria is invisible to all others. If your struggles have washed your heart then you are successful even if society tells you your life is a mess. And if your comfort has made your heart callous with apathy and indifference to God's signs then you are failing even if your life is the envy of everyone at your Highschool reunion. Define life success the way the Creator of life defined it. Lean into purification, not just away from pain.
