American club, with the option of a further year. Bay FC will make their National Women's Soccer League debut this year.

Kundananji's transfer fee breaks the previous record held by England midfielder Keira Walsh, who transferred from Manchester City to Barcelona for £400,000 in 2022.

The deal also exceeds the reported £384,000 that Chelsea paid for Colombian striker Mayra Ramirez from Levante, with add-ons potentially bringing the total to £426,600.

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Kundananji expressed her excitement about the move, saying, "People in Zambia will be surprised but they will be so happy. I want to give the [Bay FC] fans what they want - to enjoy the games, to enjoy seeing me playing and scoring."

Bay FC will pay an initial $785,000 for Kundananji, with a further $75,000 in add-ons.

The club has already signed Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala and former Arsenal defender Jen Beattie, making them a force to be reckoned with in the women's football scene.

Kundananji began her career with Zambian side Indeni Roses before moving to BIIK Kazygurt in Kazakhstan in 2019.

She then joined Spanish top-flight side Eibar and later Madrid CFF, where she scored 25 goals in 29 league games and helped the team achieve a fifth-place finish, their best ever. She has also represented Zambia internationally, scoring 10 goals in 18 games.

The recent surge in big-money moves in the women's game is reflected in Fifa's report of a 165.5% increase in transfer fees in January, despite a mere 0.3% rise in the number of international transfers.

Canada and Nigeria didn't exchange much changes in the first half, with the best chance coming from Christine Sinclair in the 8th minute, but it went wide. Canada and Nigeria went into halftime tied at 0-0. LAGC will be owned by Seven Seven Six (776) founder Alexis Ohanian, and joined by tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.

Ohanian, the creator of Reddit and Serena’s husband, is also the principal owner Los Angeles’ National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team, Angel City FC.

“Los Angeles is the perfect home for our TGL team. This city embodies the intersection of sports, technology, and entertainment, making it an ideal backdrop for the innovation and excitement we aim to bring to the world of golf and its fans,” said Ohanian.

If you’re unfamiliar with the plans for TGL, here’s the format:

Six teams of three PGA Tour players will compete in 15 regular-season Monday night matches, followed by semifinals and finals matches, starting January 2024. The matches will be played at a tech-infused, short-game complex, and fans will be able to see every shot live over a two-hour broadcast on primetime television.

Woods and McIlroy helped break ground on the TGL venue at Palm Beach State College back in February, and currently 12 players have committed to TGL, including Woods, McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and more.

The video also features voices that have denounced the broad-brush indictment of American Muslims.

teaching there for some time, Imam Khalil consulted his private teacher in Islamic law about what he should do with his life. He already had a bachelor’s degree in social work, yet because he did not possess a graduate degree, his time as a teacher at Georgia State was restricted to three years. Khalil’s teacher in Islamic law had just completed his PhD at Columbia University and was living in Atlanta completing his post-doctoral research at Emory University. The two were introduced at Khalil’s fiqh class at Masjid Ihsan in Riverdale. From then on, Khalil would read with him privately a few times a week. He advised Khalil that he should pursue a graduate degree, and that it would be better to do so in the field of Islamic law, which was already of interest to Khalil. He suggested that he come to Istanbul, Turkey and learn Turkish in order to consider do graduate work there. Turkey was also strategic, as Khalil’s teacher was Turkish himself and politically, it was less controversial. Khalil ended up accepted the offer and in the fall of 2006 Khalil traveled to Istanbul, Turkey.

He enrolled in the language school and studied the Turkish on scholarship. After one year of language study, Khalil applied and was accepted to Marmara University’s Master of Islamic Law program. The entire program was conducted in Turkish; no English was used at all. Khalil completed the program and wrote his master’s thesis in Turkish, which is entitled, “A Comparison between Islamic Law and American Law Regarding the Rules of Child Custody”. During Khalil’s last year, at the advice of the same Turkish instructor that advised him in the first place, Khalil applied to several PhD programs in the United States, hoping to return home after living abroad for almost 4 years. During his stay, Khalil would pursue academic Islamic law studies during the day, and traditional Islamic law training at night and on the weekends with private teachers. In March 2010, Khalil would receive the news that he had been accepted to the PhD program of Islamic Law at Columbia University. Out of 156 applicants for 6 spaces in the PhD program, Khalil was informed that he was the top pick in his field. At the same time, he had completed the requirements for his master’s degree, along with the requirements for his traditional doctoral (ijaaza) in Islamic sciences. Before leaving Turkey, Khalil would attend a ceremony for him in which he had 50 Turkish men witness his receiving ijaaza (the traditional doctorate of Islamic law) going back to the prophet Muhammad (saaws). He also would later receive another ijaaza in the Islamic spiritual sciences, qualifying him to take personal student and teach the spiritual path in Islam. The Shaykh who gave both ijaazas to Khalil was Muhammad Emin, the 107 year old scholar who was born and educated under the Ottoman Empire. Khalil would arrive back in the US, in New York City and accept a position as Imam of Iqra Masjid in Brooklyn, NY. Iqra is a historically Turkish Masjid, having been established 15 years ago, by the same Turkish teacher who motivated Khalil to come to Turkey for graduate study in the first place. This scholar had established the masjid while he himself was a doctoral student and trained many students after him. Khalil continues his work today as both Imam of the Masjid and continues his primary work as a full time PhD student. He has just successfully completed his first year, and has now been approached by New York University to teach the Islamic Law course next year, the first of its kind at NYU.

He has become known around New York City as the African-American Turkish Imam of New York. A graduate student in the journalism school at Columbia University has written her Master’s thesis on Khalil and how he’s part of the new trend of young Imams with an entirely immigrant congregation. Her thesis is being published and is currently titled, “The Creeping Americanization of Islam”. Khalil was recently named a “Muslim Leader of Tomorrow” by the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA). He lives in Brooklyn.

Ndola Owuo-Hagood and the new generation of
conscious female Islamic researchers. By Mansour Ansari

In these times of increased scrutiny on our Islamic community both at home and abroad, it is even more

courageous for one of our own to set a high academic goal, focus on its importance, and set about reaching heights our previous generations could only dream about. What is it that makes a person able to balance family, babies, geographical sprinting and countless other life challenges and yet focus on a Masters degree in a sensitive Islamic subject with patience, erudition and GSU style?

Enter our own Ndola Owuo-Hagood. The daughter and niece of a prominent American Muslim family, a family which placed such emphasis on their African connections which naturally led to the embrace of the Islamic faith over some decades. A daughter who herself accepted the supremacy of Almighty Allah and the Islamic faith some 14 years ago and made education among life's most important pursuits. After all, she saw her mother open a school here in Atlanta when she was 5 and, after moving to Senegal, West Africa, her mother opened a second school.

With such a background in the essential-ness of education, it was clear that she understood that the engine behind communal goals, milestones and accomplishments is run by individual goals, milestones and accomplishments. As this writer ages (some would say marinates), such communal goals, milestones and accomplishments take on a heavier and increased meaning and importance. My own daughters had their elementary education there in Atlanta's historic West End and, like my older daughter Zaynab, Sr Ndola married an accomplished young man from that community as well. In Ndola's case, Br Ayyub, the son of Abu Shaka Abdush-Shakur and Nalonga Abdur-Rahman has been a husband and father who has paved the way for his wife Ndola to make her educational pursuits a reality. We thank Allah for all concerned and share the pride felt by Ndola's noble parents Jaliwa Owuo and our brother Mikell Hagood.

But don't let me get caught in a sentimental mood, I tend to get misty, as helpless as a kitten up a tree when it comes to these areas of life.

Ndola's recent Masters thesis is entitled 'A Hermeneutical Examination of Creation in Islam at Georgia State University' in the Department of Religious Studies. The subject matter, according to any Islamic standards, is a massive one: looking at the connection (or lack thereof) between the Divine writ, the Qur'an, and the corpus of work and literature known as the ahadith and the Sunnah of the Blessed Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace. The most significant scholars of the entire Islamic paradigm have studied their entire lives and have produced oceans of volumes of work on this very subject.

Mrs Owuo-Hagood approached this subject in a challengingly modern way by focusing on five contemporary scholars who have obviously thought about these subjects day and night for long periods. Any Muslim over four years old has, needless to say, had the discussion about Qur'an and Hadith and Sunnah and had to deal one way or the other as to their connectedness (or lack thereof). After all, the saying among many is that we tend to disagree with each other on the understandings and applicabilities of the body of ahadith in our lives, especially in 21st Century America. And wouldn't it just be easier to follow the Qur'an on which we all agree and leave the ahadith? We've all had such a discussion at one point or another.

But the five scholars chosen for her research, Riffat Hassan, Azizah Al-Hibri, Barbara Freyer Stowasser, Amina Wadud and GF Haddad proved to be well-chosen to make her ultimate point that the connection is not only there but necessarily so. To leave the hadith out of the discussion would make us all quite misty, not knowing our right from our left or our hat from our glove. This writer has for decades accepted this reality of the connectedness of the Qur'an and Hadith and Sunnah out of respect for the previous generations of scholarship on the subject. When I've looked over the depth of the work on this subject it would have slowed me down in so many other areas of development that acceptance translates into acceleration in so many areas. Many of our brethren who have gotten bogged down in this area become so slow that, when their depression finally set in, they were so slow that they threw themselves BEHIND a train!

To summarize, with the exception of GF Haddad, a fellow Lebanese convert to Islam from a well-known Christian Lebanese family, the other four (all females, by the way), have developed a body of research over the years which purport, and rightly so, that after the normative period of Islamic history (some say 200, others say up to 400 years after the Hijrah), Muslims developed a male-dominated and male-centered paradigm within the Islamic ethos and tried to make it part and parcel of Islam itself and this caused the Ummah to move away from the egalitarianism and equality which made Islam great and important in the world.

Their prognosis, however, was to disconnect the body of ahadith and Sunnah from the primary source of Islam, the Qur'an, so that disagreements would disappear and male oppression of women would come out into the light of day and be seen for the unislamic phenomenon that it is. Such questions were raised in their research which, to the everyday Muslim, made us late for the ship of life departing from the dock. Was Adam created first or was it Eve? After all, each person comes from a woman. Was Eve really made from an upper rib of Adam? And, if so, does that mean that women are created FOR men? There are rudimentary questions of creation raised by these scholars. From where does the male chauvinism come? If these items could be examined and re-assessed, would it solve today's problem? All legitimate and noteworthy.

In Ndola Owuo-Hagood's conclusion, she relies on the sound scholarship of GF Haddad who, with a caring and humble hand, puts to rest any unbalanced gender-driven understandings of the subject of creation in Islam puts the blame rightfully on humans and not the Islamic sources be they the Qur'an, the body of ahadith and the Sunnah. Her enlightened research can be legitimately considered breakthrough work and we look forward to her continued endeavors (like a PhD).

I fell in love with the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and interpreting communities and, in May 2010, graduated with an Associate's Degree in Sign Language Interpreting from Georgia Perimeter College.
Deaf Muslims and the Deaf community at large are granted very limited access to Islam in this country and around the world. Global Deaf Muslim (GDM) is a non-profit organization working to change this. GDM recognizes that Deaf Muslims have a right and responsibility to learn their religion just as hearing Muslims do, but also realizes they are often not afforded the opportunity. In addition to captioning and original material presented in sign language, interpreters are one avenue of access for the Deaf community. Across the country, there is a dearth of interpreters trained and qualified to work in Islamic settings. The interpreters do not have to necessarily be Muslim themselves, but it is our responsibility to support those in our own community. I believe that ALLAH (swt) has lead me to where I am so that I may be a part of the solution.

GDM's current goal is to produce the Qur'an in American Sign Language (ASL). Though no translation can equal the Qur'an in the original Arabic, Deaf people are not able to able have full access to this aural language. Similarly, English is a second language that can never be accessed completely. An exhaustive interpretation of the Qur'an into ASL would grant hundreds of thousands of people an unparalleled opportunity to understand and grow in this religion.
