BREAKING: Wheaton College just announced proceedings to terminate Professor Larycia Alaine Hawkins
for "unqualified assertion of religious solidarity with Muslims and Jews" according to the termination notice sent by Wheaton's provost.
Not only are we facing one of the worst wave of Islamophobia in this country's history, but now top-rated professors are fired for merely asserting "solidarity."
This is a big deal. A new low in *sanctioned* intolerance and rigid religious exclusivism that better characterizes countries we criticize, than the one we are seeking to build up as a standout model for the rest to follow.
We cannot be silent in lieu of this disgrace. We must push back.
Tomorrow, January 6, 2016 at 10:00 AM sharp, I will join religious leaders of various faith communities and backgrounds and together we will send a unified response at a press conference downtown at The Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington, 1st floor sanctuary
I ask that those of you who can be there, to please come and show your support. The more, the better.
Dr. Hawkins risked everything when she chose to wear the Hijab in solidarity with targeted Muslim women, and when she insisted that Muslims, Christians, and Jews worship the same God. Now that she has been unduly punished for it; it is our turn to express solidarity with her, and to to rush to reinforce her great spirit and vision for love, unity, and tolerance for all. Not just for her sake, but for all of ours.
